Microsoft has made a strategic leadership shift by appointing Ryan Roslansky, the current CEO of LinkedIn, to lead its Office division. This new role places Roslansky in charge of Microsoft’s productivity software suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and the AI powered M365 Copilot application.
Roslansky will now serve as executive vice president of Office while continuing his responsibilities as CEO of LinkedIn. He will report to Rajesh Jha, executive vice president for experiences and devices at Microsoft, and maintain his reporting line to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for LinkedIn operations.
Microsoft acquired LinkedIn in 2016 for 27 billion dollars and has since seen its annual revenue grow to over 17 billion dollars. Roslansky, who joined LinkedIn in 2009 after working at Yahoo, took over as CEO five years ago and is now set to bring his expertise to one of Microsoft’s most iconic product suites.
In a LinkedIn post, Roslansky expressed his excitement, calling Office one of the most recognisable and influential product suites in the world. He said this new phase is about combining AI, connectivity, and productivity to meet the evolving needs of global professionals. He highlighted the unique opportunity to bridge the world of LinkedIn with the daily functionality of Microsoft Office.
As part of a broader restructuring, Microsoft also announced that Charles Lamanna and his team, previously part of the cloud and AI division, will now report to Rajesh Jha. Lamanna leads development on tools like Copilot Studio and the Dynamics 365 suite, positioning Microsoft to further its AI driven enterprise software ambitions.
Satya Nadella has recently emphasized the role of AI in transforming how professionals interact with software. He noted that AI agents may soon become the primary interface for enterprise applications, reducing manual input and improving efficiency. This shift is already reflecting in the numbers. Microsoft’s Productivity and Business Processes unit, which includes LinkedIn and Microsoft 365, reported an operating margin of over 58 percent in the recent quarter, up significantly from the previous year.
This leadership transition signals Microsoft’s growing focus on integrating AI with productivity tools, reshaping the future of workplace technology.
